Simplifying barn fire safety

“Prepare and prevent, don’t repair and regret.“

We are equestrians and career firefighters who are aiming to reduce fire related loss in one of our favorite places to be: the barn.

Barns have some of the highest risks for fires: wood structures, high levels of dust, 100s or 1000s of pounds of shavings, hay, feed, and other flammable materials like leather, saddle pads, blankets, etc., sometimes year round, outdoor use of fans and other electrical items, and open, highly ventilated breezeways. This means there are tons of fuel and ample oxygen just waiting for a spark.

As professional equestrians for more than 30 years, we realized that should a fire start or threaten our barn, we wouldn’t even know where to find a fire extinguisher. Obviously calling 911 is required, but in the minutes or longer until first responders arrive, we wanted an easy-to-use, easy-to-find set of tools that would allow anyone to prevent a fire, put out a fire in its early stages, and remove horses, people, or other animals as safely as possible.

And so FireHorse Rescue Kits were born, and we hope the specially selected and unique items ensure that your horses and barn have next level safety and you have peace of mind about your horses and property.

Minutes count.

All of FireHorse’s equipment is designed to give users quick access to life and property saving tools.

The Case:

We designed this ultra durable and easy to carry case so that it can be prominently displayed in the barn aisle, making for direct access for anyone in the event of an emergency.

What’s Inside

Selected by career firefighters and life long equestrians, each Rescue Kit’s contents include simple tools to for anyone, from grooms to first responders, to use in the event of an emergency. Many items have additional uses beyond fire safety, and are designed to keep horses, humans, and property safe.

Handheld Extinguishers

Each kit includes two (2) easy to use, point & spray extinguishers for small fires, especially hay, shavings, or feed room flames. These sprays are certified and water based, so are not intended for electrical fires. An excellent alternative to more cumbersome, full size extinguishers, these also require less maintenance and will be readily available in the case.

The brand may vary as with our supply, but the quality will not!

Firehorse Equine blindfolds

Specially designed for our Rescue Kits and found nowhere else, these horse blindfolds wear like a fly mask and restrict the horse’s vision up to 80%. During fire panic, horses have been known to refuse to leave their stalls or to return to a burning structure seeking safety. These blindfolds are intended to allow equestrians or first responders to remove animals safely and hopefully reduce injury and panic by removing visual stimulation. They are also useful for trailering, for horses sensitive to needles, and to reduce panic when waking up from anesthesia. Velcro closure, 5 per case.

Fire Gloves

During fires, the heat can melt or make latches, door knobs, locks, and other metal items impossible to handle or touch. Heat resistant to 1472 degrees and flame retardant, these gloves are made of a mix of breathable cotton knitting and double layered fiber with silicone for grip and fire resistance.

2000 Lumens Flashlight

A powerful LED flashlight is necessary in the event of an emergency. Whether piercing smoke or darkness, this handheld light is easy to operate and lightweight. Constructed of high quality aluminum alloy and reinforced for exceptional water resistance in inclement weather, this light will shine bright in all conditions. Powered by 4 AA batteries.

Fire Blanket

Industry standard safety tool rarely found in barns! These blankets provide easy and safe fire suppression when water or water-based extinguishers aren’t an option. The fire retardant fabric chokes off the burn’s oxygen to smother flames. High quality woven fiberglass cloth is exceptionally durable and effective.

Hay Thermometer

Stored bales have been known to catch fire spontaneously, especially in exceptionally humid conditions. The reasons are a combination of chemicals and exothermic reactions that use the hay and oxygen as fuel. A hay thermometer is a great tool to monitor at risk bales. This thermometer is constructed of stainless steel, measures between 0-220 degrees, and provides a simple, effective way to check if bales are heating up. Any bales measuring over 175 degrees are at risk, with anything over 200 reason to call the Fire Department.

Handheld glassbreaker

Originally designed for use in cars, this handheld glass breaker features a built in, high pressure spring that is operated by a single finger pressing the button to shatter window glass quickly and easily. It also has a U-shaped, stainless steel knife edge, which is safe to touch but will easily cut through fabric.

Rescue Rope

This 32’, 1/3 inch rope is composed of nylon rope skin and an inner core designed for durability and lower static elongation, meaning it won’t stretch or fray. Stainless still thimbles are reinforced at each end with easy to use and secure snaps. This rope is perfect for creating a tie line to secure horses in the event of an evacuation, in addition to a multitude of other uses such as helping a horse that is cast in its stall or as a guideline for trailering.

One per kit.

Smoke Masks

This smoke-proof mask is wetted in a special solution that protects breathing from harmful gases. Designed for use in evacuating, the mask neutralizes harmful breathable chemicals and smoke via chemical bonding, eliminating hydrogen chloride, hydrogen cyanide, sulfur dioxide, sulfuric acid gas, formaldehyde and ammonia. Place around lower head to cover the nose and mouth (or those of a child or animal) and form a seal between the wet filter fabric and skin. A highly elastic band prevents a gap from forming while breathing. Also useful for holding hot objects or heated door handles.
